Getting Around - Batam Island

There are no public transport system. However, you can find plenty of taxis and Ojeks (motor cycle pillion transport) operating in the street outside the terminal, but these cater mainly to locals.

Another option is to arrange for your hotel to send a courtesy vehicle to meet and greet you. Most of the better hotels offer this service.

Getting around on Batam can be challenging, thrilling, frustrating, educational, frightening and a lot of FUN – often all at the same time. It also is very CHEAP compared with transportation costs in developed Western countries.

There are also private MINI-BUSES operators and WALKING. There are no becaks or bemos, so common in some Indonesian towns and cities.

A few taxi and mini bus drivers and ojek operators speak reasonable to good English and others have very basic English language skills. Most speak very little or no English at all.

If you do decide to use an Ojek the old rule applies – negotiate the price before you engage the driver and avoid arguments and bad feeling later. The best is to stick to a tour guide that provides complimentary land transport.

HarborFront Center Ferry Terminal is located at the Singapore Cruise Center, within the HarborFront Center (HFC). To get to the HFC take a taxi or a bus, or you can use the MRT (Mass Rapid Train system).

Due to the proximity of Singapore, most visitors to Batam find that coming by high-speed transport ships is the easiest method of transport.

By MRT (Subway Train)

The ferry operators are located on the 3rd floor and tickets can be purchased there. The journey to Batam takes approximately 45 mins to an hour. The HarborFront Center is also a large shopping complex, so you can purchase items or enjoy a meal or drink while waiting to depart.
